Many Karen women traditionally practice massage as part of their traditional medicine.

Karen houses
are generally one large room every eats, sleeps and works in this
common area. Here a massage is given after hard days work while
waiting for rice to cook.
Karen are famous
for their elephants.

surround and protect Pedong Karen Village.
Often seen in
the west around Christmas, the poinsetta is a traditional hedge
and protective fence for Karen village. The bright red flowers
clearly establish the entrance.
Moving from
village to village often by mountain river requires the ability
to manufactor your ride on the spot! Here a Karen friend makes
the raft to carry us to next village and him to market.
And after a
short walk...we see another karen village through the trees. Easily
missed if you did not look closely. The Karen as a rule value
remote and fairly secluded locations for villages. Too much traffic
and they will simply move.
